U.S. stocks struggled through a turbulent day Tuesday and eked out small gains, led by utility and consumer stocks. The price of crude oil continued to fall, and energy and mining stocks tumbled.
The Dow Jones industrial average picked up 27.94 points, or 0.2 percent, to 16,016.02.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose one point to 1,881.33.
The Nasdaq composite index lost 11.47 points, or 0.3 percent, to 4,476.95.

The Dow is down 1,409.01 points, or 8.1 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 162.61 points, or 8 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 530.46 points, or 10.6 percent.
