Stocks closed lower on Monday, weighed down by declines in energy and mining companies as the price of oil and other commodities fell. Trading volume was lighter than usual following the Christmas holiday weekend.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 23.90 points, or 0.1 percent, to 17,528.27.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 4.49 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,056.50.
The Nasdaq composite shed 7.51 points, or 0.2 percent, to 5,040.99.

The S&P is up 2.40 points, or 0.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 304.93 points, or 6.4 percent.
