Stocks closed slightly lower in extremely light trading Thursday as investors remained on the sidelines ahead of Christmas. The price of crude oil continued to recover. U.S. markets will be closed Friday in observance of Christmas.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 50.44 points, or 0.3 percent, to 17,552.17.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 3.30 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,060.99.
The Nasdaq composite rose 2.56 points, less than 0.1 percent, to 5,048.49.
For the week:
The Dow was up 423.62 points, or 2.5 percent.
The S&P 500 index was up 55.44 points, 2.8 percent.
The Nasdaq was up 125.41 points, or 2.6 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 270.90 points, or 1.5 percent.
The S&P is up 2.09 points, or 0.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 312.44 points, or 6.6 percent.
