Stocks closed modestly lower on Monday as traders returned from the Thanksgiving holiday to focus on early signs of how the holiday shopping season may turn out and where interest rates may go in the U.S. and Europe.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 78.57 points, or 0.4 percent, to 17,719.92.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 9.70 points, or 0.5 percent, to 2,080.41.
The Nasdaq composite index lost 18.86 points, or 0.4 percent, to 5,108.67.
For the year:
The Dow is down 103.15 points, or 0.6 percent.
The S&P is up 21.51 points, or 1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 372.61 points, or 7.9 percent.
