The stock market broke a four-day slump with modest gains on Tuesday. Leaders included retailers, media companies and homebuilders.
The Dow Jones industrial average added 27.73 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,758.21.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged up 3.14 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,081.72.
The Nasdaq composite index lost 12.06 points, or 0.2 percent, to 5,083.24.

The Dow has lost 152.12 points, or 0.9 percent.
The S&P 500 has fallen 17.48 points, or 0.8 percent.
The Nasdaq has shed 63.88 points, or 1.2 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 64.86 points, or 0.4 percent.
The S&P is up 22.82 points, or 1.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 347.19 points, or 7.3 percent.
