How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Wednesday

U.S. stocks closed lower on Wednesday, weighed down by a slide in energy stocks as the price of oil tumbled. Investors sifted through the latest company earnings and deal news. Yahoo slumped 5 percent after reporting a steep drop in a closely watched measure of revenue. Other big companies, including General Motors, delivered better earnings than Wall Street was expecting.

For the day:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 48.50 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 17,168.61.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index slid 11.83 points, or 0.6 percent, to 2,018.94.

The Nasdaq composite lost 40.85 points, or 0.8 percent, to 4,840.12.

For the week:

The Dow is down 47.36 points, or 0.3 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 14.17 points, or 0.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 46.57 points, or 1 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 654.46 points, or 3.7 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 39.96 points, or 1.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 104.06 points, or 2.2 percent.
