How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Thursday

Stocks notched their best gain in nearly two weeks on Thursday as investors responded to some positive earnings surprises from banks. Financial stocks rose after Citigroup reported profits that beat analysts' expectations. KeyCorp also climbed sharply after reporting its earnings.

For the day:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 217 points, or 1.3 percent, to close at 17,141.75.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 29.62 points, or 1.5 percent, to 2,023.86.

The Nasdaq composite climbed 87.25 points, or 1.8 percent, to 4,870.10.

For the week:

The Dow is up 57.26 points, or 0.3 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 8.97 points, or 0.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 39.63 points, or 0.8 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 681.32 points, or 3.8 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 35.04 points, or 1.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 134.04 points, or 2.8 percent.
