U.S. stocks closed higher Monday as traders looked ahead to a busy week for corporate earnings. The subdued trading followed the best week for the market this year.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 47.37 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 17,131.86.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 2.57 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,017.46.
The Nasdaq composite rose 8.17 points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,838.64.
For the year:
The Dow is down 691.21 points, or 3.8 percent.
The S&P 500 index is down 41.44 points, or 2.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 102.59 points, or 2.2 percent.
