Another weakening of China's currency sent U.S. markets sharply lower Wednesday, but by the end of the day major indexes recovered nearly all the ground they had lost earlier. The Dow Jones industrial average had been down as much as 277 points.
For the day:
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 0.33 point, less than 0.1 percent, to 17,402.51.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.98 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,086.05.
The Nasdaq composite climbed 7.60 points, or 0.2 percent, to 5,044.39.
For the week:
The Dow is up 29.13 points, or 0.2 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 8.48 points, or 0.4 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 0.84 points, or 0.02 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 420.56 points, or 2.4 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 27.15 points, or 1.3 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 308.33 points, or 6.5 percent.
