How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Thursday

Stocks ended the day mostly flat on Thursday, recovering from broad losses earlier in the day. Investors continue to focus on corporate earnings, and Thursday's batch brought mostly disappointing results from Procter & Gamble, Facebook and others.

For the day:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 5.41 points, or 0.03 percent, to 17,745.98.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.06 of a point to 2,108.63.

The Nasdaq composite rose 17.05 points, or 0.3 percent, to 5,128.78.

For the week:

The Dow is up 177.45 points, or 1 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 28.98 points, or 1.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 40.16 points, or 0.8 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 77.09 points, or 0.4 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 49.73 points, or 2.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 392.73 points, or 8.3 percent.
