U.S. stock indexes closed sharply higher on Monday following encouraging news on consumer spending and home sales. Energy stocks and banks notched some of the biggest gains. The latest round of corporate deals also helped lift the market.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 263.65 points, or 1.5 percent, to 17,976.31.
The S&P 500 index added 25.22 points, or 1.2 percent, to 2,086.24.
The Nasdaq composite rose 56.22 points, or 1.2 percent, to 4,947.44.
For the year:
The Dow is up 153.24 points, or 0.9 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 27.34 points, or 1.3 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 211.39 points, or 4.5 percent.
