How the Dow Jones industrial average fared Tuesday

U.S. stock indexes mostly fell on Tuesday as oil continued to slide and investors fretted over when the Federal Reserve will raise a key borrowing rate. Nine of 10 industry sectors of the Standard and Poor's fell, led by raw material companies.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 128.34 points, or 0.7 percent, to 17,849.08.

The S&P 500 fell 6.91 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,074.28.

The Nasdaq composite edged up 7.93 points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,937.43.

For the week:

The Dow is up 99.77 points, or 0.6 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 20.88 points, or 1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 65.68 points, or 1.4 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 26.01 points, or 0.2 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 15.38 points, or 0.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 201.38 points, or 4.3 percent.
