How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Wednesday

U.S. stocks edged lower on Wednesday, extending losses from a sell-off a day earlier. Investors are nervous about the likelihood of higher U.S. interest rates and the sharp appreciation in the value of the dollar.

On Wednesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 27.55 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,635.39.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped 3.92 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,040.24.

The Nasdaq composite fell 9.85 points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,849.94.

For the week:

The Dow is down 221.39 points, or 1.2 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 31.02 points, or 1.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 77.43 points, or 1.6 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 187.68 points, or 1.1 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 18.66 points, or 0.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 113.89 points, or 2.4 percent.
