US stocks gain after two days of losses; Oil prices lower

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are rising in midday trading, led by gains in technology companies, as the market recovers following two days of declines.

Energy stocks lagged the rest of the market Tuesday as the price of crude oil moved lower again.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 219 points, or 1.2 percent, to 17,859 as of 11:45 a.m. Eastern.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 21 points, or 1.1 percent, to 2,049. The Nasdaq composite increased 72 points, or 1.6 percent, to 4,737.

U.S. benchmark crude oil lost 50 cents to $45.56 a barrel. It traded as low as $44.20, the lowest since April 2009. Brent crude dropped $1.33 to $47.36 a barrel.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.93 percent.
