Stocks closed mostly lower on Tuesday, led by declines in energy companies as the price of oil continued to fall. Energy stocks fell the most of the 10 industries in the S&P 500 index. Oilfield services companies were especially hard hit. Investors were also disappointed by earnings outlooks from companies including Priceline and Michael Kors.
The Dow rose 17.60 points, or 0.1 percent, to 17,383.84.
The S&P 500 index dropped 5.71 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,012.10.
The Nasdaq composite fell 15.27 points, or 0.3 percent, to 4,623.64.
