Stocks fell Wednesday after the Federal Reserve said it would cut back further on its economic stimulus. The central bank and its newly installed Chair Janet Yellen also suggested the Fed was moving closer to raising interest rates.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 114.02 points, or 0.7 percent, to 16,222.17.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 11.48 points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,860.77.
The Nasdaq composite gained 25.71 points, or 0.6 percent, to 4,307.60.
For the week:
The Dow is up 156.50 points, or 1 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 19.64 points, or 1.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 62.20 points, or 1.5 percent.
For the year so far:
The Dow is down 354.49 points, or 2.1 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 12.41 points, or 0.7 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 131.01 points, or 3.1 percent.
