How the Dow Jones industrial average did Thursday

U.S. stocks ended sharply lower on Thursday as investors reacted to more discouraging data on China's economy and tensions flared up over Russia's military presence in Ukraine. It was the worst day for the market in six weeks and the fourth loss in a row for the Dow Jones industrial average.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 231.19 points, or 1.4 percent, to 16,108.89.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 21.86 points, or 1.2 percent, to 1,846.34.

The Nasdaq composite lost 62.91 points, or 1.5 percent, to 4,260.42.

For the week:

The Dow is down 343.83 points, or 2.1 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 31.70 points, or 1.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 75.80 points, or 1.8 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is down 467.77 points, or 2.8 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 2.02 points, or 0.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 83.83 points, or 2 percent.
