Stocks mostly rose on Friday, adding to the February's strong gains. Investors were encouraged by news that manufacturing expanded in the Midwest this month at a faster pace than economists were expecting.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 49.06 points, or 0.3 percent, to 16,321.71.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 5.16 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,859.45.
The Nasdaq composite fell 10.81 points, or 0.3 percent, to 4,308.12.

The Dow is up 218.41 points, or 1.4 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 23.20 points, or 1.3 percent.
The Nasdaq has gained 44.71 points, or 1.1 percent.

The Dow is down 254.95 points, or 1.5 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 11.09 points, or 0.6 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 131.53 points, or 3.2 percent.
