The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index both fell on Monday after a report showed that the U.S. services industry grew at a slower pace than forecast in December. The S&P 500 ended lower for a third straight day, marking the worst start to a year for the index in almost a decade.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 44.89 points, or 0.3 percent, to 16,425.10.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index declined 4.6 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,826.77.
The Nasdaq composite fell 18.23 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,113.68.
