The Dow Jones industrial average edged higher on Monday as the stock market extended its rally from Friday, when the government reported strong hiring for last month.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index eked out another record close after a big acquisition in the food industry. Hope that a budget deal will be reached in Washington also boosted stocks.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 5.33 points, or 0.03 percent, to 16,025.53.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 3.28 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,808.37.
The Nasdaq composite gained 6.23 points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,068.75.
For the year:
The Dow is up 2,921.39 points, or 22.3 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 382.18 points, or 26.8 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 1,049.24 points, or 34.8 percent.
