The Dow Jones industrial average closed above 16,000 for the first time as encouraging news on the job market pushed stocks higher. The Standard & Poor's 500 also rose, closing just below 1,800.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 109.17 points, or 0.7 percent, to 16,009.99.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 14.48 points, or 0.8 percent, to 1,795.85.
The Nasdaq composite gained 47.88 points, or 1.2 percent, to 3,969.15.

The Dow is up 48.29 points, or 0.3 percent.
The S&P 500 index is down 2.33 points, or 0.1 percent.
The Nasdaq composite is down 16.82 points, or 0.4 percent.
