The latest news from the Federal Reserve spooked investors Wednesday.
Stock and bond prices fell after minutes from the Fed's latest meeting showed that the U.S. economy was improving steadily enough to warrant a reduction in stimulus in "coming months."
The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 66.21 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 15,900.82.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 6.50 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,781.37.
The Nasdaq composite declined 10.28 points, or 0.3 percent, to 3,921.27.

The Dow is down 60.88 points, or 0.4 percent.
The S&P 500 index fell 16.81 points, or 0.9 percent.
The Nasdaq composite declined 64.70 points, or 1.6 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 2,796.68 points, or 21.3 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 355.18 points, or 24.9 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 901.76 points, or 29.9 percent.
