ANOTHER HIGH: The Dow Jones industrial average edged up and closed at an all-time high for the 35th time this year. Stocks ground higher in the absence of any major economic news or big earnings reports. The Standard & Poor's 500 index also edged up, ending a fraction short of its own record close.
LOW VOLUME: Monday was among the quietest days of the year. Stock trading on the New York stock exchange was low as bond investors took the day off in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.
RARE DISEASE: ViroPharma jumped $10.04, or 26 percent, to $49.42 after the company agreed to be acquired by drugmaker Shire PLC, which wants to strengthen its rare disease treatment portfolio.
