BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Officials from the state of Vermont and Allegiant Air announced Tuesday the airline would begin offering direct flights between the Burlington International Airport and Orlando, Fla., in February.

To celebrate, the airline is going to offer fares as low as $67 each way for the twice-a-week service between Burlington and Orlando.

The Allegiant Air flights replace direct Burlington-Orlando flights that JetBlue ended a year ago.

"We are thrilled to welcome a new airline to Burlington for the second time in only two years and appreciate the confidence that Allegiant has demonstrated in Burlington and our airport," Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger said while announcing the new service.

Currently, Orlando is the third most popular destination for travelers leaving Burlington, after New York and Washington.

"We are pleased to bring a new, affordable and convenient travel option to the residents of Burlington," said Allegiant Travel Company President Andrew Levy.

Allegiant Air already offers direct flights from Plattsburgh, N.Y., to Orlando.

Vermont Transportation Secretary Brian Searles says the state agencies of Transportation and Commerce and Community Development are going to help market the route.
