How the Dow Jones industrial average did Wednesday

The Dow Jones industrial average fell after Caterpillar reported weak earnings and cut its revenue outlook. Falling oil prices pulled energy stocks lower. The Standard & Poor's 500 index also fell, ending a streak of four record closes in a row.

The Dow fell 54.33 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 15,413.33.

The S&P 500 index dropped 8.29 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,746.38.

The Nasdaq composite slipped 22.49 points, or 0.6 percent, to 3,907.07.

For the week so far:

The Dow is up 13.68, or 0.1 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 1.88 points, or 0.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 7.21 points, or 0.2 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 2,309.19 points, or 17.6 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 320.19 points, or 22.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 887.56 points, or 29.4 percent
