GOLD-ILOCKS RALLY: Newmont Mining was the biggest gainer in the Standard & Poor's 500 on Monday, benefiting from a rally in the price gold and silver. Gold rose for a fourth day on reports that demand in China was growing.

DEAL NEWS: BlackBerry jumped after the struggling smartphone company said that it would consider a sale. Dole Foods rose after its CEO said he would take the company private, and Steinway Musical Instruments climbed after receiving a new buyout offer.

SUMMER LULL: Overall, the market appeared still to be in the summer lull that began last week. The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged two points lower, paring its gains for the month to 0.2 percent. That compares with a surge of almost 5 percent in July. Trading volume was light.
