How the Dow Jones industrial average did Wednesday

Disappointing earnings news and a slump in bank stocks tugged the stock market down Wednesday, giving major indexes their first three-day drop since June.

Banks had some of the biggest losses following news that the government filed lawsuits accusing Bank of America of misleading investors.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 48.07 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 15,470.67.

The S&P 500 fell 6.46 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,690.91.

The Nasdaq composite index dropped 11.76 points, or 0.3 percent, to 3,654.01.

For the week:

The Dow is down 187.69 points, or 1.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 18.76 points, or 1.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 35.58 points, or 1 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 2,366.53 points, or 18.1 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 264.72 points, or 18.6 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 634.50 points, or 21 percent.
