How the Dow Jones industrial average did Wednesday

The Dow Jones industrial average rose Wednesday after comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke that reassured investors that the U.S. central bank would only cut back on its stimulus when the economy was ready. The Standard & Poor's 500 index also advanced.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 18.67 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 15,470.52.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 4.65 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,680.91.

The Nasdaq composite advanced 11.50 points, or 0.3 percent, to 3,610.

For the week so far:

The Dow is up 6.22, or 0.04 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 0.72, or 0.04 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 9.92, or 0.3 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 2,366.38 points, or 18.1 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 254.72 points, or 17.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 590.49 points, or 19.6 percent.
