How the Dow Jones industrial average fared Tuesday

Strong housing and earnings reports helped stocks rebound Tuesday, a day after the market's biggest sell-off in five months.

Home construction topped 1 million last month, the highest level since June 2008. Robust earnings from companies including Coca-Cola also propelled the market higher.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 157.58, or 1.1 percent, to close at 14,756.78.

The S&P 500 index rose 22.21 points, or 1.4 percent, to 1,574.57.

The Nasdaq composite rose 48.14 points, or 1.5 percent, to 3,264.63.

For the week:

The Dow is down 108.28 points, or 0.7 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 14.28 points, or 0.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 30.32 points, or 0.9 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,652.64 points, or 12.6 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 148.38 points, or 10.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 245.12 points, or 8.1 percent.
