The stock market finished one of the worst weeks of the year Friday, pushing Washington to work out a deal to avoid the tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect Jan. 1. Remarks by re-elected President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner on the looming deadline didn't do much to cheer the market. Stocks finished barely higher for the day.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 4.07 points, or 0.03 percent, to 12,815.39.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 2.34 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,379.85

The Nasdaq composite rose 9.29 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,904.87.

For the week:

The Dow is down 277.77 points, or 2.1 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 34.35 points, or 2.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 77.26 points, or 2.6 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 597.83 points, or 4.9 percent.

The S&P is up 122.25 points, or 9.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 299.72, or 11.5 percent.
