How the major US stock indexes fared on Wednesday

A pair of encouraging reports about the housing market gave U.S. stocks a little boost Wednesday.

Home sales jumped to the highest level in more than two years in August, the National Association of Realtors said. Earlier, the government reported that construction of single-family homes in August also was the fastest in more than two years.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 13.32 points, or 0.1 percent, at 13,577.96.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.73 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,461.05.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 4.82 points, or 0.2 percent, to 3,182.62.

For the week:

The Dow is down 15.41 points, or 0.1 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 4.72 points, or 0.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 1.33 points.

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,360.40, or 11.1 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 203.45, or 16.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 577.47, or 22.2 percent.
