Stocks soared on Friday, pushing the Dow Jones industrial average past 13,000 for the first time since early May. Investors were encouraged by a joint statement from German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande pledging to protect the union of 17 countries that use the euro.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 187.73 points, or 1.5 percent, to 13,075.66.
The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 25.95, or 1.9 percent, to 1,385.97.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 64.84, or 2.2 percent, to 2,958.09.

The S&P 500 is up 23.31, or 1.7 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 32.79, or 1.1 percent.

The Dow is up 858.10, or 7 percent.
