THE CARS: Nearly 73,000 Kia Rio subcompacts from the 2006 to 2008 model years, built between Feb. 20, 2005 and Dec. 9, 2007.
THE PROBLEM: A sensor mat in the cushion of the front passenger seat can develop cracks and fail to detect if a child is sitting there. That can cause the air bag to inflate in a crash, injuring the child. Cars are designed so air bags don't inflate when children are in the front seat. Kia said in documents that it knows of no injuries from the problem.
THE SOLUTION: Kia will begin a recall in July to replace the sensor mats for free.
