Finnair technical staff start 1-week strike

Some 1,000 Finnair technical staffers have started a weeklong strike to protest the airline's plans to outsource some services, which would result in layoffs and cutbacks.

The strike comes after unions rejected the national carrier's proposals on financial support for laid off workers.

The Finnish airline said Tuesday that the strike will affect some routes but that it will be able to undertake most of its flights.

In April, the airline signed an agreement with SR Technics on engine and component maintenance support as part of a move to restore the company's profitability.

Finnair is struggling against budget airlines amid fierce competition and has set a target to cut annual costs by 140 million euros ($185 million) by 2014.
