Political uncertainty in debt-hobbled Europe spread to financial markets Tuesday and pushed stocks lower in Europe and the United States.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down almost 200 points at its low point for the day before recovering most of its loss. It was the average's fifth straight decline.
The Dow closed down 76.44 points, or 0.6 percent, at 12,932.09.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 5.86, or 0.4 percent, to 1,363.72.
The Nasdaq composite index fell 11.49, or 0.4 percent, to 2,946.27.
For the week:
The Dow is down 106.18 points, or 0.8 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 5.38, or 0.4 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 10.07, or 0.3 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 714.53 points, or 5.9 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 106.12, or 8.4 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 341.12, or 13.1 percent.
