Summary Box: Job growth slowed in April

HIRING SLOWS: U.S. job growth slumped in April for a second straight month, pointing to an economy that is growing at a steady but still sluggish pace. The Labor Department said employers added 115,000 jobs, below March's upwardly revised total of 154,000.

RATE FALLS: The unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent from 8.2 percent, but only because more Americans gave up looking for work. People who aren't searching for jobs aren't counted as unemployed.

SPUTTERING ECONOMY? Hiring accelerated to an average of 252,000 per month from December through February, but averaged only 135,000 in the two months since then.
