Summary Box: Ex-Yugoslav airlines urged to join up

FLIGHT PATH: A European aviation grouping is urging financially troubled carriers of the former Yugoslavia to step up cooperation to survive fierce competition from major airlines and low-cost carriers.

FLEDGLING CARRIERS: After the Yugoslav federation broke up in 1991, each of six newly independent nations set up its own flag carrier. Some of these have already failed, others are struggling to survive.

STORM CLOUDS: Analysts have noted that all four remaining airlines face similar problems because they are too small to be competitive, and they all must reduce costs to stay in the market.
