Summary Box: Investors focus on the good news

THE OPTIMISTS' CLUB: Thursday brought a mix of good and bad news about the economy. Investors chose to shrug off concerns about unemployment claims and European markets and chose instead to focus on bright earnings at some companies and encouraging news about home sales. All three major stock indexes closed higher.

BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME: The Standard & Poor's 500 briefly flitted above 1,400 in the afternoon, then closed just shy of that marker at 1,399.98. It was the first time in three weeks that the S&P 500 crossed that barrier in intraday trading.

THE BIG NAMES: So far this season, companies have generally turned in strong first-quarter results. Thursday brought a few notable exceptions as Exxon, Dow Chemical, UPS and others turned in weak reports.
