THE RESULTS: First-quarter profit at Yum Brands Inc. rose 73 percent on the strength of rebounding sales in the U.S., led by Taco Bell, and a continuing robust performance in China.
U.S. SURGE: Yum posted a 27 percent increase in U.S. operating profit in the first quarter, continuing a domestic sales comeback that began in the fourth quarter of 2011. Revenue rose at established stores for all three Yum brands, with Taco Bell posting a 6 percent increase.
OVERSEAS GAINS: Operating profit rose 14 percent in China, adjusted for currency fluctuations. In Yum's international division, which excludes China and India, operating profit rose 9 percent, adjusted for currency fluctuations.
