SPENDING RISES: Warmer weather and a better job market spurred spending on electronics, home and garden supplies and spring clothes last month. The increase capped a quarter of solid retail sales gains.
MORE RESTOCKING: Businesses responded by steadily restocking their shelves, a sign they expect the spending trend to continue. More spending also helped offset a decline in confidence among homebuilders, which fell in April for the first time in seven months.
JOBS NEEDED: Mild weather likely boosted spending at clothing and home supply stores. More hiring and bigger income gains will be needed to sustain spending, economists cautioned.
