PIPLEINE TARGETED: Gunmen attacked a pipeline belonging to Italy's Eni SpA in Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta. The main militant group in the region claimed responsibility.
IMPACT UNCLEAR: Eni said engineers were examining the damage. The company did not say how much oil had been spilled or whether oil production had been affected.
TROUBLED REGION: In 2006 militants began attacking foreign oil companies _ bombing pipelines, kidnapping workers and fighting security forces. The violence ebbed in 2009 with a government-sponsored amnesty program promising ex-fighters monthly payments and job training. Few have seen the promised benefits and scattered kidnappings and attacks continue.
