How the major stock indexes fared on Friday

Stocks wrapped up their worst week of the year Friday. Stocks also fell in Europe as borrowing costs rose for Spain and Italy. If those countries have to pay more to borrow, they'll have less money for other things, like jump-starting economic growth. The Dow was down all day but selling accelerated in the last half-hour. All 10 sectors in the Standard & Poor's 500 fell, led by bank stocks.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 136.99 points, or 1.2 percent, to close at 12,849.59.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 17.31 points, or 1.3 percent, to 1,370.26.

The Nasdaq composite fell 44.22 points, or 1.5 percent, to 3,011.33.

For the week:

The Dow is down 210.55 points, or 1.6 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 27.82 points, or 2 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 69.17 points, or 2.3 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 632.03 points, or 5.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 112.66 points, or 9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 406.18 points, or 15.6 percent.
