U.S. stocks and Treasury prices plunged Tuesday after Federal Reserve policymakers said they were worried about a slowdown in hiring and appeared to resist buying more bonds to help the economy.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 64.94 points, or 0.5 percent, at 13,199.55.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index finished down 5.66, or 0.4 percent, at 1,413.38.
The Nasdaq composite index lost 6.13, or 0.2 percent, to 3,113.57.

The Dow is down 12.49 points, or 0.1 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 4.91, or 0.3 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 22, or 0.7 percent.
For the year so far:
The Dow is up 981.99 points, or 8 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 155.78, or 12.4 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 508.42, or 19.5 percent.
