RATES FALL: Unemployment rates fell in 29 U.S. states last month, including some that were hit hardest in the recession. Rates rose in 8 and were unchanged in 13.
MORE JOBS: Job gains were more widespread, evidence that the recent acceleration in hiring has been widely distributed across the country. Employers in 42 states added jobs in February, while 8 states reported job losses.
TURN-AROUNDS: Michigan's rate fell to 8.8 percent last month, from a peak of 14.2 percent in August 2009, as the auto industry has resumed hiring. Florida, California and South Carolina have also seen their high rates come down.
