Union Pacific is promoting several executives as the railroad deals with its CEO's medical leave and the retirement of its top lawyer.
UP said earlier this month that executive vice president for marketing and sales Jack Koraleski will serve as acting president and CEO while Jim Young battles pancreatic cancer. Young remains chairman of the board.
The railroad says Eric Butler, who has been with the company for 26 years, will take over Koraleski's position of executive vice president for marketing and sales.
UP also says 32-year railroad veteran Gayla Thal has been promoted to senior vice president and general counsel. She replaces Michael Hemmer who plans to retire later this year after helping with the transition.
Union Pacific shares rose $4.12, or 3.9 percent, to $111.83 in morning trading.
