The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said Thursday that there's new funding to help preserve open lands for conservation and recreation.
DEEP said that at least $5 million will be available in grants through the Open Space and Watershed Land Acquisition program. Cities and towns, land conservation organizations and some water companies are eligible. The money will be divided among several conservation projects, based on applications.
Lands purchased under this grant program include old farms, raw forests and areas surrounding parks.
Open space grants do not fund entire projects, but instead are designed to assist the sponsors.
Municipalities and other sponsors looking to acquire and preserve land have until late June to apply for funding.
