Oklahoma AG Scott Pruitt warns about tax scams

Attorney General Scott Pruitt is warning Oklahomans about fraudulent tax refund schemes that involve criminals that are trying to cheat senior citizens and families.

Pruitt says the perpetrators promise a substantial refund or nonexistent stimulus payment from the American Opportunity Tax Credit, even if the individual is not attending or paying for college. Consumers also may be asked to pay a steep fee upfront in exchange for the filing.

The Internal Revenue Service says thousands of bogus claims have been identified and stopped in recent weeks. The fraud includes criminals falsely claiming that college credit is available to compensate individuals who pay taxes on groceries.

Pruitt's office urges Oklahomans to be cautious of flyers advertising refunds without any proof of identification and to be wary of unsolicited tax preparation offers.
