THE RESULTS: H&R Block Inc. trimmed its loss in its fiscal third quarter to $3.3 million, or a penny per share, compared with a loss of $12.7 million, or 4 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue fell 2.5 percent to $663.3 million, from $680.3 million.
TAX STATS UP: The nation's largest tax preparer said it handled 5.1 percent more tax returns through the end of February than last year. Returns prepared in retail stores rose 1.6 percent, and digital returns grew nearly 13 percent.
ONLINE GAINS: The company's online do-it-yourself preparation segment improved, with returns increasing 20.4 percent.
