W.Va.'s unemployment rate 7.8 percent in January

West Virginia's unemployment rate rose to 7.8 percent in January, up from 7.4 percent in December.

WorkForce West Virginia says the number of unemployed residents climbed by 2,400 to 61,600. Total unemployment was down 11,100 over the year.

There was a loss of 12,700 jobs in the service-providing sector. The declines included 4,100 in government employment, 3,800 in trade, transportation, and utilities, and 1,900 in educational and health services.

The goods-producing sector lost 3,400 jobs, including 2,700 in construction.

The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped four-tenths of a percentage point to 7.4 percent in January. That compares to the national rate of 8.3 percent.
