FOUR POINTS SHY: The Dow Jones industrial average rose as high as 12,996 before settling at 12,984, a gain of 46 points. The Dow hasn't closed above 13,000 since May 19, 2008.
SAFEWAY SLAMMED: The grocery store operator fell 8 percent after the company reported a 6 percent drop in earnings. The grocery industry has been loathe to pass along cost increases to budget-conscious shoppers.
SEARS SOARS: Sears Holdings Corp. jumped 19 percent after the company said it would spin off some its smaller stores, cut inventories and sell 11 stores.
